යාපනය – අරාලි තුඩුවේදී ත‍්‍රස්තවාදී ප‍්‍රහාරයකින් ජීවිතක්ෂයට පත්වූ දිවංගත ලූතිනන් ජෙනරාල් ඩෙන්සිල් කොබ්බෑකඩුව ශ‍්‍රීමතාණන්ගේ 22 වන ගුණ සමරුව අදට යෙදී තිබෙනවා. ප‍්‍රධාන ගුණ සමරු උත්සවය අද (08) උදෑසන අනුරාධපුර ඩෙන්සිල් කොබ්බෑකඩුව පිළිරුව අභියස දී පැවැත්වුණා. ගුණ සමරු උත්සවයට සමගාමීව ඇලයාපත්තුව දුෂ්කර ගම්මානයට භාණ්ඩ ප‍්‍රදානය කිරීම ඊයේ සිදුකෙරුණේ කොබ්බෑකඩුව මහතාගේ පවුලේ සාමාජිකයින්ගේ සහභාගීත්වයෙන්. අද පැවැති ගුණ සමරු උළෙලට ප‍්‍රදේශයේ මහා සංඝරත්නය වැඩම කර සිටි අතර එහිදී කොබ්බෑකඩුව මහතාගේ පිළිරුවට පුෂ්පෝපහාර දැක්වීම ද සිදුවුණා

The 22nd death anniversary of the legendary War Hero, Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa of the Sri Lanka Army falls today (Aug 8).

Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, one of the finest warriors ever produced by the Army in our contemporary history, fell silent on August 8, 1992 along with a few more fellow military veterans and soldiers,Major General Wijaya Wimalarathne, Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha, Lieutenant Colonel H.R Stephen, Lieutenant Colonel G.H Ariyarathne, Lieutenant Colonel Y.N Palipana, Commander Asanga Lankathilaka, Lieutenant Colonel Nalin de Alwis, Lieutenant Commander C.B  Wijepura and Private W.J Wickremasinghe while they were on a military assignment in Araly Point, Kayts, Jaffna.

This year’s merit invoking ceremonies and other commemorative programmes were to take place at Denzil Kobbekaduwa statue at Anuradhapura and Thanthirimale Rajamaha Viharaya with the participation of Mrs Laly Kobbekaduwa, family members and late Lieutenant General’s friends and fellow-mates.

Lieutenant General Kobbekaduwa’s Regiment, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC), were to have its own commemorative arrangements.

Memories of late Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, the legendary War Hero of our times, were refreshed, distributing dry rations to less fortunate in Thanthirimale, conduct of alms givings and Bodhi Poojas, Dhamma sermons, etc.

Lt Gen Denzil Kobbekaduwa, an old Trinitian, joined the Sri Lanka Army on 25 May 1960. After the basic military training at the Army Training centre, he left for Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, UK for further training and was commissioned to the Sri Lanka Armoured corps, as a Second Lieutenant on 3 August 1962.

Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, along with several other military leaders made the supreme sacrifice when their vehicle fell victim to a pressure mine on 8 August 1992 when they were in Araly Point, Kayts, Jaffna.

Governor for North Central Province Mr Karunaratne Divulgane, Chief Minister for North Central Province, Mr Chandrasena, Mrs Laly Kobbekaduwa, senior officers, relatives of late Lieutenant General Kobbekaduwa and members of the public were to present at the Anuradhapura military ceremony where floral wreaths are laid.
